(AP) — Freshman JuJu Watkins scored a Southern California-record 51 points — the most in NCAA women's basketball this season — and the 15th-ranked Trojans upset No. Watkins hit six 3-pointers to help the Trojans (15-4, 5-4) send the Cardinal (19-3, 8-2) to their first home loss of the season. Watkins came in averaging 25.8 points and Hall of Fame Stanford coach Tara VanDerveer turned to freshman Courtney Ogden to try stopping her. Stanford star Cameron Brink had 19 points, 15 rebounds and eight blocked shots — swatting six shots in the first half. McKenzie Forbes added X points for USC, which had lost three of four since beating UCLA on Jan. 14.

(AP) — It never fails, Tara VanDerveer always takes a minute to thank everybody for coming to the game and that includes offering her immense gratitude to the Stanford band. “This is a tremendous accomplishment for Tara VanDerveer, who is already one of the most accomplished coaches in the history of basketball,” Krzyzewski said in a statement. Oregon State coach Scott Rueck credits VanDerveer for elevating the entire over the decades. Stanford: VanDerveer, who didn't have the playing opportunities growing up before Title IX, has considered herself so fortunate to get an early start in coaching at Idaho in 1978-79. She earned her 1,000th win Feb. 3, 2017, and became winningest women's coach on Dec. 15, 2020, by passing the late Tennessee coach Pat Summitt (1,098).

(AP) — Stanford's Tara VanDerveer tied Mike Krzyzewski as the winningest coach in college basketball history with her 1,202nd victory Friday night, guiding the No. VanDerveer can set the record Sunday, when she goes for 1,203 as Stanford (16-2, 5-1 Pac-12) hosts Oregon State. A couple dozen former Stanford players are expected to be on hand for the potential milestone. Cardinal players hugged their smiling coach and lifted her up in celebration after the teams shook hands. Stanford: VanDerveer has just one losing season, going 13-15 in her first campaign at Stanford in 1985-86.
